beginners guitar corner First things First

Now presuming you have access to a guitar, lets get you set up so you can learn how to play it. To begin, your going to need a way of keeping your guitar strings tuned up. To check if your guitar is in tune, you can check out the Guitar Tuner Widget, which is placed on the Learning Guitar Sessions page. I suggest that you get yourself a guitar tuner. There are several on the market that are both good & inexpensive. "Silvertone" makes a good guitar tuner called the "Stun2" which tunes both electric & accoustic guitars. It's very easy to use, inexpensive and it comes with instructions.

To begin learning guitar, is to begin learning basic chords played on the guitar. If you are unfamiliar on what a guitar chord actually is, see guitar chord definition. You will find a link back to this page after you read the definition.

I created 2 basic guitar chord charts for individuals first learning guitar. One chart has the 7 basic major chords, and one chart has the 7 basic minor chords. These chords are presented on easy to read diagrams, so you will see which finger to place where on the guitar fretboard, to form the chord.

I call these chords "basic guitar chords" because they are the easiest chords for a beginning guitarist to learn and understand. These chords are played at the top of the neck, between the 1st & 4th fret of the guitar. And in time you will learn this to be called the 1st position on the guitar.

I would suggest printing the 2 chord charts or saving them to your hard drive, so you have these chords in front of you as your learning them. You can print or copy these chord charts by the following 2 links.
