C Major Scale - Guitar Session 3

Session 3, here were going to be looking at the 12th fret on the guitar. Also playing the C Major scale in the 12th position, and the C Major scale in the 17th position on the guitar.

When you reach the 12th fret on the guitar, all the notes repeat thereselves going from the 12th fret to the 24th fret, exactly like they did from the open string played to the 12th fret.

The notes on the 12th fret are the same notes as the open string notes on the guitar. But now the notes are an octave tone higher in tone.

Below is what I call a scales chart key. On the scale charts themselves, you wiil see these suggested fingering symbols for the notes played in the scale.

O = Open string played
= Index Finger
=Middle Finger
=Ring Finger
=Little Finger
Strings that are played open will be marked with "O" on top of the scale diagram.

Guitar scale chart #1 displays the C Major scale in the 12th position on the guitar.

The scale pattern shown is the exact same pattern as we played the C Major scale in the 1st position, but now the 12th fret carries the same notes as the open strings. Where as when we played this same scale pattern in the 1st position, we played the D, G, and B notes using the open string played.

Guitar scale chart #2 displays the C Major scale in the 17th position on the guitar. This scale pattern is exactly the same, as the scale pattern in the 5th position on the guitar.

Guitar Scale Chart 2

This session was intended to show you how the notes and scale patterns repeat themselves, when you get to the 12th fret on the guitar.

Practice the C Major scale in both of these scale charts, as you did in guitar sessions 1 & 2. By ascending and descending scale.

It's a good practice when you learn a new scale, to learn the scale all over the guitar. Learning the C Major scale all over in different positions on the guitar, will help familiarize you on where all the notes are located on the guitar fretboard, as well as help you memorize where all the notes are on the guitar fretboard.
